Aegean Region TurkeyColossae, located in the Honaz district of Denizli province, was an underdeveloped city in the fertile valley of the Lycus River 2500 years ago. If it were not for its biblical importance, the site of an ancient Colossae, now forgotten as an ordinary mound, would be rarely visited. Honaz is an agricultural town.
Paul's letter to the Colossians is evidence of the early Christian community. The town was known for syncretism, a blend of religious influences including Jewish, Gnostic, and pagan influences. In the 1st century AD, this syncretism was described as an angel cult.
The Letter to the Colossians addresses problems in the church and challenges believers to examine their lives and be transformed through the love of Jesus. Paul wrote this letter because of a report that the Colossians had made a serious mistake (see Bible Dictionary, “Pauline Epistles”).
